San Clemente, California (June 17, 2018) – More than 250 of the nation’s top Under 18-year-old surfers will battle for national titles and spots on USA Surfing’s junior national teams this week at the 2019 Toyota USA Surfing Championships at San Onofre State Beach’s Lower Trestles. This event marks our tenth year at iconic Lower Trestles.
The June 18-22 event at San Onofre State Beach’s Lower Trestleswill be running live on the STACT appand Saturday’s finals will be streamed live on Surfline. See schedule. USA Surfing Championships are the most highly anticipated event in junior surfing, drawing surf industry leaders, media and talent scouts. The under 18 surfers competing in this week’s event qualified for the event through regional competitions held across Mainland USA and Hawaii. As surfing makes its 2020 Olympic debut, the athletes’ performances will provide a preview of surfers who could represent the United States in future Olympic Games and on the WSL Championship Tour. USA Surfing’s Prime Series and Championships were created to bridge the gap young surfers experience when working to make the leap from pro junior competition to next-level competition opportunities. The event includes all the features of the highest-level surfing events held across the world with elite judging, announcing, replay, and four-person heats. This year’s action will be called by fan-favorite announcers Todd Kline and Ryan Simmons. The judging panel will include five seated judges, one head judge, two rotating judges and a spotter. The top judges and officials in the world are assembled with decades of experience scoring elite events around the world. They include David Shipley, who ran Hawaii’s Triple Crown of surfing; Gordon Lawson and Jeremy Saukel, who regularly judge the Florida Pro and Ron Jon Pro plus ISA World Surfing Games; Tory Gilkerson, a WSL International Judge, ISA Judge and World Longboard Champion; and, WSL North America Head Priority Judge Tim Manno is a regular at the US Open of Surfing. Several WSL pro surfers honed their competitive skills through Toyota USA Surfing’s Prime Series. Caroline Marks, currently ranked No. 2 in the World Surf League Championship Tour, qualified for the CT while competing in USA Surfing’s Prime Series and Championships. Other greats include 2nd-ranked Kolohe Andino, 8th-ranked Conner Coffin, fan favorite Griffin Colapinto, 2018 US Open champions Courtney Conlogue (currently ranked No. 5) and Kanoa Igarashi, No. 6 Lakey Peterson, No. 15 Sage Erickson. USA Surfing will announce its 2020 junior national teams following USA Championships. The 2020 USA Junior Surf Team named at this event will be eligible to compete at the 2020 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. The U.S. team won silver in the 2018 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Huntington Beach and gold at the 2017 World Junior Championship in Hyuga, Japan. Hundreds of surfers from more than 40 nations across all continents of the globe compete in the ISA World Junior Championships. The 2019 USA Junior Surf Team, named at this event last year, will compete at the 2019 ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Huntington Beach California October 25 – November 4, 2019.
