Expect intense competition and big performances, as athletes battle for titles and a chance to surf at USA Surfing Championships at Lowers.
San Clemente, Calif. (April 30, 2019) – The season finale of the West Coast Toyota USA Surfing Prime Series presented by Got Milk? will be held this weekend, May 4 and 5 at San Clemente’s T-Street. More than 100 of the best under 18 surfers on the West Coast will compete for Series titles and cumulative points that qualify them to surf at USA Surfing Championships June 18-22 at Lower Trestles. “We should see some intense competition and big performances, as athletes battle for titles and a chance to surf at Championships,” USA Surfing CEO Greg Cruse said. USA Surfing’s junior national team coach Brett Simpson will hold a junior national team training on Thursday, May 2. He's looking forward to seeing the performances surfers bring to the Prime finale. “New venue, new challenges. If they haven’t competed in Kolohe’s Invitational or the Gudauskas’ brothers’ Stoke-O-Rama events, T-Street will be a new spot for most of the kids, which can present some unknowns,” Simpson said. “T-Street offers up nice lines for some quality maneuvers. With some swell ordered up, it looks like we will have some high-performance conditions over the weekend. Let’s see who steps up and takes the big wins leading up to USA Championships in a couple weeks!” Several World Surf League stand outs honed their skills in the Prime Series, including No. 1-ranked Caroline Marks, No. 3 Courtney Conlogue, No. 6 Kolohe Andino and Lakey Peterson, as well as Sage Erickson, Kanoa Igarashi, Conner Coffin, Griffin Colapinto and more. The Surfline forecast calls for conditions to pick up through the weekend. Waves should be in the three- to four- foot range for Saturday and Sunday. The invite-only Prime Series is a competition among surfers who placed highest in regional competitions held by USA Surfing’s affiliate organizations – the Western Surfing Association, Eastern Surfing Association, National Scholastic Surfing Association and Texas Gulf Surfing Association. USA Surfing’s Prime Series was created to bridge the gap young surfers experience when making the jump to the bigger leagues of surfing, including a position on the USA Surfing national teams, the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series, the WSL Championship Tour and potentially the Olympic Games. The Prime format provides surfers with an experience similar to WSL pro events with professional WSL/ISA judges and announcers, four-person heats using priority, computer scoring live on the STACT App and instant replay for the judges.
