Groundbreaking Research for Para Surf Athletes
Dr. Maureen “Dr. Mo” Johnson, Associate Professor at the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences and global expert in adaptive sports classification, will present opportunities for surfing stakeholders to participate in her pioneering research on the barriers and facilitators to competitive para surfing. Two different research opportunities will be presented: 1. An online survey for all para surfing stakeholders to learn individual access and barriers to participating in para surfing, and 2. Individual virtual interviews for competitive adaptive women surfers only-we want to hear your journey as a professional adaptive surfer. The presentation begins at 2:30 p.m. on June 9, following the the Para Surfing Championship event at the competition site.
Para surfers – surfers who compete with permanent physical and visual impairments, are faced with additional financial and environmental barriers with training and traveling to compete worldwide..
Dr. Mo’s work includes classifying permanent eligible impairments so surfers can compete in heats with surfers who have similar abilities so there is a more leveled playing field. Her newest research plans to highlight financial, logistical, and structural challenges in the para surfing development pathway, along with opportunities for reform and equity through informed classification, greater brand, and other financial support.
