Calling SoCal Artists with a Passion for Surfing: Two San Clemente Murals to Commemorate Olympic Debut
Community murals make a strong statement: (Left to Right) Artist Kevin Anderson's mural in Cardiff, Calif.; a mock up of a mural featuring Team USA's Olympic team; the International Surfing Museum entrance Huntington Beach, Calif.; Artist Dominique Antony's wave wall in Hossegor, France, and the blank canvas awaiting inspiration at 102 Avenida Victoria
(April 20, 2021) – USA Surfing and the City of San Clemente invite artists to submit their qualifications for the opportunity to create murals celebrating surfing’s first Olympics at two locations in the historic downtown of San Clemente. The deadline for submission is May 10.
The murals will help San Clemente showcase the city as home to two Olympic surfers competing in surfing’s first Olympics this summer (Kolohe Andino and Caroline Marks) and USA Surfing - the National Governing Body for Olympic surfing.
“Surfing is an integral part of the history and the future of San Clemente. Baseball might be the American pastime, but surfing is the San Clemente pastime. From the swell watchers to the surfboard shapers, surfing is a legacy we are proud to embrace,” said San Clemente’s economic development officer Jonathan Lightfoot. “We are excited that this downtown mural project will highlight the impact of surfing to our town while we cheer on our American surf team from local watch parties this summer. The City is cheering for you Carissa, Caroline, Kolohe, and John John!”
“San Clemente has a historic and strong surfing and artist community,” said USA Surfing COO Andrea Swayne. “We look forward to seeing the artists’ visions come to life at the two locations. This is an exciting time for surfing and San Clemente – home of USA Surfing and two Olympic surfers.”
"We are honored to be a part of the mural project celebrating San Clemente's influence on the world of surfing. We wish our athletes all the best. Go USA!" said Sam and Eugenia Kollias, owners of the commercial space at 102 Avenida Victoria.
