National Titles and ISA World Championship Team Positions Up for Grabs
Oceanside Harbor, Calif. (June 7, 2018) – National titles and spots on Team USA’s World SUP Championship roster are on the line at the June 13-15 USA Surfing SUP Championships at Oceanside Harbor’s North Jetty. The top StandUp athletes from across the nation will go head to head in Oceanside Harbor – a fantastic high-performance venue. USA Surfing’s SUP Championships draw the best SUP racers, SUP surfers, and paddleboarders from up and down the East and West coasts and Hawaii. SUP athletes will compete in three different divisions: juniors (Under 18 girls and boys) Open men and Open women (all ages) and Masters men and Masters women (40 plus). Team trials will also be held for remaining positions on the SUP surfing World Championships team. “The opportunity to compete against the nation’s best and potentially represent your country at the ISA World SUP and Paddleboard Championships is a dream come true for U.S. SUP athletes,” said Team USA manager Candice Appleby, the winningest SUP athlete in the history of the sport. “The rapid growth of SUP and surge in U.S. talent make it an exciting time to compete against the best elite SUP athletes in the U.S. and earn a spot on Team USA’s stacked roster,” said USA Surfing CEO Greg Cruse. Team USA won the overall silver medal at the 2018 ISA World SUP Championship event in Wanning, China’s Riyue Bay point break with some impressive performances: 18-year old Ryan Funk and 16-year old Jade Howson swept the gold medals for USA in the SUP technical race junior divisions. Candice Appleby won gold in the SUP technical race. Hunter Pflueger won gold in the Paddleboard distance race. USA is looking to field a formidable ISA World SUP Championship team. U.S. women swept the podium at the season-opening London SUP Open last month with Seychelle Webster winning gold, April Zilg taking silver and Candice Appleby bronze. Sean Poynter won two ISA World Championship paddle surfing gold medals (in 2013 and 2015) and holds USA SUP Surfing Champion titles for 2017 and 2018. Daniel Hughes qualified for the Pan American Games this year. Connor Baxter won the silver medal in the 2018 SUP World Championship technical race and a bronze medal in the sprint race Last year’s gold medalists receive an automatic spot on the team to defend their world championship title. The 2018 World Championship gold medalists are Hunter Pflueger in mens prone, Candice Appleby in women’s technical racing, and Jade Howson for junior women’s technical racing. Team USA World SUP Championship Qualifying Criteria -- The top two men and women in each of the open categories (distance, technical, SUP surf) qualify for the team. -- The top junior man and top junior woman in technical races qualify for the team.
