Huntington Beach, Calif. (May 16, 2021) – The Toyota USA Surfing Prime Series started and ended in “Surf City USA” - Huntington Beach, Calif. Wave conditions were challenging with lots of current, clean-up sets, rain squalls and wind. Surfers had to adjust and chase opportunities.
As the final stop of the West Coast Toyota USA Surfing Prime Series, the rankings and qualifiers were set for invites to the USA Surfing Championship where the best of the best from the East Coast, West Coast and Hawaii will compete for national titles at Lower Trestles, Calif. in June.
Congratulations to our West Coast season champions: Girls U16 and U18 season champion Caitlin Simmers; Boys U14 season champion Rex Hennings; Boys U16 season champion Cole McCaffray; and Boys U18 season champion Lucas Owston
Highlights of the final event included Oceanside’s Caity Simmers of Oceanside, backing up a 9.5 with an 8.67 to win Girls U16 and the highest wave score and heat total of the event. The Boys U16 final was a battle between San Clemente’s Ben Brantell and Santa Barbara’s Jak Ziets. It came down to Ben’s backup wave to clinch the win.
The Toyota Prime Series draws more than 100 of the West Coast’s best junior surfers to battle it out for West Coast titles and qualification into the Toyota USA Surfing Championships at Lower Trestles in California. The event is the highest level of junior amateur competition in the nation.

The Toyota USA Surfing Prime Series makes stops along both East and West coasts and culminates in the USA Surfing Championships. The competition was created to bridge the gap young surfers experience when trying to make the leap from pro junior competition to next-level competition opportunities, including a position on the USA Surfing national teams, the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series and potentially the Olympics and WSL Championship Tour. The Prime Series champion and podium roster is a who’s who in American surfing.
Surfers competing in the Prime Series experience an event with judging, announcing and organization consistent with WSL pro events, including professional WSL/ISA judges and announcers, four-person heats with priority, computer scoring live on the STACT App and instant replay for Championships' judges.
