Oceanside, Calif. (March 25, 2021) – More than 100 of the best under 18 surfers on the West Coast will be back in jerseys competing at Oceanside Harbor South Jetty this weekend for the second stop of the Toyota USA Surfing West Coast Prime Series presented by Got Milk?. The Toyota USA Surfing Prime Series is the highest level of junior amateur competition in the nation. Rankings and qualifying points are built throughout the five event series for coveted invites to the national USA Surfing Championship at Lower Trestles, Calif. in June. See rankings here. Surfline is calling for three to four feet wave conditions on Saturday and two to three-plus for Sunday. USA Surfing coach Brett Simpson is a big fan of Oceanside: “O-side sandbars are fun. We should see some high-performance, beach break surfing this weekend!” Several local surfers made the podium in the first event in Huntington Beach and will be looking to defend or better their positions at their home break. Oceanside’s Caitlin Simmers, Lucas Owston are power surfers to watch. Carlsbad’s Alyssa Spencer is in form preparing for more WSL QS and potentially CT events this year. Also look for strong performances from Encinitas rippers Kyan Yang, Syd Ott, Cole McCaffray, and Greyson Grant. The Toyota USA Surfing Prime Series makes stops along both East and West coasts and culminates in the USA Surfing Championships. The competition was created to bridge the gap young surfers experience when trying to make the leap from pro junior competition to next-level competition opportunities, including a position on the USA Surfing national teams, the World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series and potentially the Olympics and WSL Championship Tour. The Prime Series champion and podium roster is a who’s who in American surfing. Surfers competing in the Prime Series experience an event with judging, announcing and organization consistent with WSL pro events, including professional WSL/ISA judges and announcers, four-person heats with priority, computer scoring live on the STACT App and instant replay for the judges. USA Surfing’s Prime Series is grateful for the support of our fabulous sponsors. We will miss seeing them at events under Covid-19 restrictions, but expect they will resume their beach participation soon.
